Depois de uma semana meio doida...dei comigo a pensar qual o tema que deveria debater convosco. E de imediato me ocorreram as rotundas!
Sim, porque as rotundas têm muito que se lhes diga; muito mais do que parece...
Segundo este link, e por definição, rotunda é uma "praça circular de onde partem as ruas".
Ora se assim é, devemos decorar essas praças para que se tornem mais apelativas, certo?
Errado!!!!!
Grande parte das autarquias e restantes entidades responsáveis pela gestão das vias de comunicação nacionais, tem uma estranha apetência pela "decoração" das rotundas das nossas vilas e cidades (e até de algumas aldeias...).
E curiosamente a população, de um modo geral, parece apreciar este tipo de iniciativa.
Mas é exatamente aqui que começa o problema...
Senão vejamos:
A função das rotundas passa essencialmente pela distribuição rápida e expedita do tráfego motorizado, por vezes intenso, sem recurso a semáforos, ou qualquer outro método.
Nessa perspetiva, dever-se-á promover as melhores condições para que tal ocorra em segurança.
E que me dizem desta bela rotunda?

Bonitas, não são? Aposto que chamaram a vossa atenção, verdade?
Um dos problemas é mesmo esse: chama a atenção!
E se chama a atenção para a "praça", distrai a atenção da estrada....
A quantos de nós não aconteceu já, tentarmos apreciar algumas rotundas que contornamos e de repente sentir o carro a "fugir" para algum sítio, pois desviámos o olhar da estrada?
E mais, se pensarmos de um ponto de vista técnico e prático, facilmente percebemos que a manutenção de espaços desta natureza envolve toda uma logística difícil de coadunar com a utilização das faixas de rodagem.
Trocado por miúdos: imaginem só a dificuldade que os jardineiros têm para transportar o material de trabalho (corta relvas, tesouras, tesourões, sacos de lixos, adubos, enxadas,...) e os restos dos materiais verdes resultantes de podas, cortes de relva e outros, de e para a rotunda...
E já agora que estão na crista da onda, imaginem também como é fácil proceder à lavagem de fontes luminosas (e não só) e reparação de equipamento, bem no meio da estrada!!
E a sorte que eles têm em chegar ao final do dia vivinhos e sem nenhum arranhão, depois de tanta ginástica...
Voltando à questão inicial, será racional e útil decorar as rotundas desta forma tão exuberante?
Na minha humilde perspetiva, enquanto cidadã e paisagista, mais uma vez me parece que deveria predominar o bom senso. As rotundas exercem uma importante função na regulação do trânsito e PONTO.
É imprescindível que se entenda o perigo que representam todas as outras utilidades que se lhe possam atribuir, quando estas conduzem à distração dos condutores.
Existem inúmeros materiais passíveis de ser usados no revestimento/pavimentação das rotundas, com função decorativa, mas de forma discreta. Falo concretamente dos diferentes tipos de cascalho, casca de pinheiro, variados inertes existentes no mercado e até mesmo o tradicional e simples relvado.
Não compliquemos o que é fácil.
Se as autarquias têm disponibilidade financeira e interesse em embelezar os seus municípios, com toda a certeza terão oportunidade de o fazer, recorrendo para o efeito à construção de jardins de proximidade, nas zonas perto de escolas ou outros espaços públicos, à construção de parques infantis (ainda que de pequenas dimensões) junto às zonas residenciais, à plantação de árvores de arruamento, à construção de barreiras de vegetação ao longo dos passeios e a tantas outras formas de introduzir o verde e a beleza nas suas povoações.
De certo que a população apreciaria muito mais, com a vantagem de poder usufruir desses espaços...
E por hoje ficamos por aqui. Reflitam um pouco nesta mensagem e, se partilharem do seu conteúdo, transmitam-na aos que vos são mais próximos. Pode ser que, com jeitinho, acabe por chegar aos ouvidos de quem de direito....

After a week a little bit crazy...I found myself wondering what theme should I discuss with you. And immediately roundabouts occurred to me!
Yes, because roundabouts have much to say about them; much more than it meets the eye...
According to this link, and by definition, a roundabout is a "circular square from where streets begin."
Well if so, we should decorate these squares to make them more appealing, right?
Wrong ! !
Many municipalities and other entities responsible for the management of national routes of communication, have a strange appetite for "decorating" roundabouts of towns and cities (and even some villages...).
And, interestingly, population in general, seem to enjoy this type of initiative.
But that is exactly where the problem starts ...
Consider this:
The function of roundabouts goes essentially by quick and expeditious distribution of sometimes intense motorized traffic, without using semaphores, or any other method .In that perspective, it should promote the best conditions for this to occur safely.And what do you think about this beautiful roundabout?

One of the problems is exactly that: they draw attention!
And if it draws attention to the "square ", it distracts attention from the road...
How many of us did already tried to enjoy some roundabouts and suddenly felt the car "running away", because we deviated the look of the road?
Plus, if we think of a technical and practical point of view, we'll easily realize that maintaining spaces of this nature involves a whole difficult logistics, not consistent with the use of lanes.Just imagine the difficulty that gardeners have to carry the work material (mower, shears, loppers, bags of garbage, fertilizers, hoes,...) and the remains of green materials resulting from pruning cuts, grass and others, to and from the roundabout...
And while you are thinking of it, imagine how easy it should be to clean fountains (with or without lightning) and repair any equipment, right in the middle of the road!
And how lucky workers are by getting alive through the end of the day...
Returning to the initial question, is it rational and helpful decorating roundabouts so lush?In my humble perspective, as a citizen and landscaper, once again it seems to me that common sense should prevail. Roundabouts play an important role in regulating the traffic and THATS IT!
It is essential to understand the danger of all other utilities that you can assign, when they lead to distraction of drivers.There are numerous materials that could be used in the coating/flooring of roundabouts, with decorative function, but discreetly. I speak specifically of the different types of gravel, pine bark, various aggregates existing in the market and even the traditional and simple lawn.
Do not complicate what is simple.
If municipalities have financial availability and interest in beautifying their cities, they will have the opportunity to do so, by constructing proximity gardens in areas near schools or other public spaces, building playgrounds (even if they're small) next to residential areas, planting trees along sidewalks, constructing vegetation barriers along sidewalks and so many other ways to introduce green and beauty in their villages.I'm sure that people would appreciate much more, with the advantage that they would be able to enjoy these spaces...
And that´s all for today. Reflect a bit in this message and, if you share of it content, transmit it to those close to you. It may be that, nicely, it will eventually reach the ears of those eligible...
